From 1976 to 1996, Canal Jean Co. ruled the corner of Broadway and Canal Street in lower Manhattan. It wasn't just a store — it was a destination. A sprawling, chaotic, glorious warehouse of vintage denim, army surplus, band tees, and downtown cool that drew everyone from punk kids to fashion editors to tourists who stumbled in and never wanted to leave.

Before vintage was a category and thrift was a trend, Canal Jean Co. was doing it at scale — and doing it with style. The checkerboard logo became shorthand for a certain kind of New York: unpretentious, eclectic, and completely its own thing.
