Second Avenue, New York City. 1968 to 1971.

Bill Graham opened the Fillmore East in a former movie theater on the Lower East Side and turned it into the greatest rock venue in America. In three years, the stage hosted Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane — virtually every major act of the era passed through those doors.

The Allman Brothers recorded At Fillmore East there in March 1971 — widely considered one of the greatest live albums ever made. The Dead played there so often it became their East Coast home. Hendrix performed some of his most celebrated shows on that stage.

Graham closed the Fillmore East on June 27, 1971, with a final show featuring the Grateful Dead, the Beach Boys, and Santana. He said the music business had gotten too big, too corporate, and too far from what it was supposed to be.

He was right.

The building still stands on Second Avenue. There's a plaque. That's all that's left.
