They Owned Their Own Studio. That Fact Explains Everything That Came After It.

10cc formed in 1972 in Stockport, England — Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, Lol Creme — four musicians who had been working as professional songwriters and session players and knew exactly what they were doing in a studio. They didn't just record at Strawberry Studios. They owned it. Unlimited time. No clock running. No label engineer watching the budget.

The name came from Jonathan King, who signed them. The origin of it is what you'd expect from a band that would spend the next four years making records that were simultaneously sincere and satirical, technically ambitious and completely accessible.

"I'm Not in Love" is the document. 1975, from The Original Soundtrack. The bed of sound underneath the vocal is not synthesizers. It is hundreds of individual voice recordings — every member of the band and several people from the studio staff, each singing a single note — recorded onto tape loops that ran on machines throughout the studio. They built a chord out of human voices and then played it like an instrument. It took three weeks. The song went to number one in the UK and number two in the US and people assumed it was made with machines because it didn't sound like anything that could be made by hand.

In 1976, Godley and Creme left to develop an experimental guitar device called the Gizmo and pursue their own projects. Gouldman and Stewart kept the name. The post-split lineup had hits — "The Things We Do for Love," "Dreadlock Holiday" — but the band that made "I'm Not in Love" was the four of them together with unlimited studio time and no particular reason to stop experimenting.
