"Duane Eddy" Unisex T-Shirt (Limited Edition)

In the late 1950s, Duane Eddy and his producer Lee Hazlewood figured out that if you ran a guitar signal through a 2,000-gallon corrugated metal water tank in the parking lot of Audio Recorders studio in Phoenix, Arizona, you got a reverb unlike anything that existed on the market. Deep, cavernous, slightly unpredictable. Eddy would play the melody on the bass strings — low and resonant rather than bright and piercing — and the tank would do the rest. That combination of technique and accident became one of the most identifiable sounds in the history of popular music.

"Rebel-'Rouser" came out in 1958 and reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It had no lyrics. It needed none. The guitar did everything. By 1963, Eddy had sold 12 million records — more than almost any other instrumental artist in rock history. "Because They're Young," the theme from the 1960 film of the same name, reached #4. He covered Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" theme and made it his own. The Ventures built their entire sound on the template Eddy established. Hank Marvin of the Shadows came to Britain with an echo-drenched Stratocaster playing Eddy-style lines and influenced a generation of British guitarists, including a young George Harrison, who cited Eddy as a direct influence. Bruce Springsteen later brought Eddy in to play on "Pink Cadillac."

Eddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2008. He passed away on April 30, 2023, at 86. This is a tribute to a man who proved that a guitar, the right technique, a water tank, and a good ear for tone could change music permanently.
