Manchester, 1982. James formed in the same city, at roughly the same moment, as The Smiths and The Fall. They shared a label with The Smiths for a spell. They had Tim Booth — one of the most physically extraordinary frontmen in British rock, a dancer and a mystic and a genuine original. They should have been enormous from the start.
It took a while. They spent most of the 1980s as a cult act, beloved by people who'd seen them live and couldn't stop talking about it. Then came 1991. Gold Mother. "Sit Down" reached the UK Top 10. At Glastonbury in 1993, the crowd spontaneously sat down during the song — tens of thousands of people, all at once — in one of the defining festival moments of the decade.
"Laid" followed in 1993, crossing over in America. "Sometimes." "She's a Star." "Getting Away with It (All Messed Up)." James broke up in 2001. They reformed in 2007 and have been selling out arenas ever since, because the songs never stopped being that good.
