Three days after Street Survivors hit record stores, a chartered Convair 300 ran out of fuel over Mississippi and crashed into a swamp. Ronnie Van Zant was killed. Steve Gaines was killed. Cassie Gaines was killed. The band's road manager and two crew members died with them. Others survived, some barely.

MCA pulled the original cover within days. The flames behind the band — already printed, already in stores — were too much. They replaced it with a plain black background. The original pressing became one of the most sought-after artifacts in rock history. People who had it didn't let go of it.
