She Was Already Famous Before Andy Warhol Introduced Her to the Velvet Underground.

Christa Päffgen was born in Cologne in 1938. She survived the Allied bombing of the city as a child. At 16 she was modeling in Paris. At 23 she appeared in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita — one scene, no lines, unforgettable. She had a son with Alain Delon, the French actor, who refused to publicly acknowledge the child. She met Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones in London. She recorded a single produced by Jimmy Page. By the time she arrived in New York in 1965, she already had a biography that most artists spend a lifetime constructing.

Warhol had her join the Velvet Underground as a third vocalist alongside Lou Reed and John Cale. She sang three songs on The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967): "Femme Fatale," "All Tomorrow's Parties," and "I'll Be Your Mirror." Reed wrote "Femme Fatale" and "All Tomorrow's Parties" specifically for her voice — a low, flat, European contralto that had no precedent in American rock music. The Velvet Underground never sold many records while they were together. The album has never gone out of print.

Her solo work is where the full picture emerges. Chelsea Girl (1967) she disowned — too much orchestration, decisions made without her. The Marble Index (1969), produced by John Cale, is something else entirely: harmonium drones, sparse arrangements, songs that feel like transmissions from somewhere outside ordinary time. It is one of the most original albums of the 1960s and was heard by almost no one when it came out. Cale produced two more: Desertshore (1970) and The End (1974). The lineage from those records to goth, post-punk, and art rock is direct and documented.

She died in Ibiza in 1988, from a cerebral hemorrhage after a bicycle accident. She was 49.
