Three Guitarists. Three Bands That Changed Rock History. One Bandleader Who Kept Finding Them.

John Mayall was born in 1933 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and moved to London in 1963 at age 29 to pursue music full time. Late start by any measure. He didn't care. Within three years he had assembled one of the most consequential lineups in British rock history.

The album formally titled Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton (1966) — known universally as the Beano album because Clapton is photographed reading a Beano comic on the cover, apparently indifferent to being photographed — documented what Clapton could do when given room to move. The guitar tone Clapton achieved on that record — a 1960 Les Paul Standard through a Marshall amp pushed near its limits, recorded at Decca studios in London — became the template for British blues-rock guitar. It remains one of the most studied and imitated tones in rock history. Shortly after, Clapton left to form Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce.

Mayall replaced him with Peter Green, whose approach was different — more lyrical, less aggressive — and who was briefly considered by some critics to be the superior player. Green left in 1967 to form Fleetwood Mac with fellow Bluesbreakers drummer Mick Fleetwood. Mayall then brought in Mick Taylor, who stayed from 1967 to 1969 before being recruited directly by the Rolling Stones to replace Brian Jones. Taylor played on Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St.

Mayall never had a major pop hit. He kept working anyway. He was still touring as recently as 2022 and received the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Musical Influence Award in 2024, months before his death at age 90 in July of that year. Seven decades. The blues the whole way through.
