Robert Johnson recorded 29 songs. Twenty-nine. In two sessions — November 1936 at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, and June 1937 at a warehouse on Park Avenue in Dallas — he laid down the entire foundation of modern rock and roll. He played facing the corner of the room, reportedly to keep other musicians from watching his fingers. Those two addresses are the complete recorded legacy of the most influential blues musician who ever lived.
He was 27 years old when he died in 1938. The cause of death is still disputed. The legend — that he sold his soul at a Mississippi crossroads, at the junction of Highways 61 and 49 outside Clarksdale — in exchange for his extraordinary guitar skills has never been disproven to anyone's satisfaction.
What is not disputed: Eric Clapton called him "the most important blues musician who ever lived." Keith Richards heard his records and couldn't understand how one man was simultaneously running bass patterns and melody lines that sounded like two guitarists playing at once. Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and virtually every rock band that followed built their sound on the foundation Robert Johnson laid in those two sessions.
He was unknown in his lifetime. He is immortal now.
