Athens, Georgia. 1979. Four art students at the University of Georgia started making music that sounded like nothing else coming out of America. Angular, danceable, hypnotic — Pylon built a sound from scratch that would go on to influence everyone who heard them, including a little band called R.E.M. who called them, without hesitation, the best band in the world.
Vanessa Briscoe Hay's voice cut through the room like a signal. Michael Lachowski's bass locked in with Curtis Crowe's drums and created a groove that was simultaneously tense and irresistible. Randy Bewley's guitar was pure texture and attack. Together they made Gyrate and Chomp — two of the most essential post-punk records ever recorded — and then broke up in 1983 at the height of their powers, because that's what Pylon did.
They reunited. They kept playing. The music held up because it was built to last.
This tee is for the people who know. The ones who've been to Athens, or wish they had. The ones who understand why Pylon matters — not just as a footnote to R.E.M.'s story, but as the main event.
