Brian Jones didn't just co-found the Rolling Stones — he named them, shaped their early blues sound, and introduced the sitar, dulcimer, and Mellotron to rock music. He played sitar on "Paint It Black." He brought Moroccan musicians into the studio for "Continental Drift." He pushed the band toward psychedelia when Mick and Keith wanted to stay blues-based. By 1968 he was marginalized in his own band, and by 1969 he was out of it entirely. Less than a month after being fired, Brian Jones drowned in his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm. He was 27. The official verdict was death by misadventure. Questions remain.

He was the first member of what would become known as the 27 Club — though that name wouldn't exist for years. Jimi Hendrix followed in 1970. Janis Joplin the same year. Jim Morrison in 1971. The club nobody wanted to join kept growing.

When Iggy Pop wore the "Brian Jones Lives" shirt, he was making an argument: that the people who get pushed out, burned out, or erased from the official story are still present in the music. That the experimentalist who expanded rock's sonic vocabulary beyond anything Mick and Keith imagined didn't disappear when he left the band. That influence is not the same thing as credit, and credit is not the same thing as legacy.
