Keith Richards Was Facing Heroin Trafficking Charges in Canada. He Went to Paris and Made the Best Riffs of His Life.

In 1977, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police found heroin in Keith Richards' hotel room in Toronto. He was charged with trafficking — a conviction could have meant years in prison and the end of the Rolling Stones. The band went to Paris instead, set up in a studio, and recorded Some Girls. It came out in June 1978 and sold faster than any Stones record in years.

It was the first album they'd made without Mick Taylor, who had quietly handed in his resignation in 1974. Ronnie Wood was in, and what he and Richards built together in Paris was looser and more dangerous than anything on the albums in between. Keith's rhythm work on "Shattered" is relentless. The opening riff of "Beast of Burden" is one of the most recognizable things he's ever played. "Before They Make Me Run" — which he wrote and sang himself, essentially about his own legal situation — is as honest as he ever got on record. The title track drew public objections from Jesse Jackson and the NAACP. The Stones didn't pull it. The album went to #1 in the US and UK.

Richards was eventually given a suspended sentence in Canada, ordered to play a benefit concert for the blind. He did. Then he kept playing.
