Punk said rock was dead. Disco said rock was irrelevant. The Rolling Stones were in Paris, recording in exile, with Keith Richards facing heroin trafficking charges in Canada that could have ended the band entirely. They made Some Girls anyway. It came out in June 1978 and settled the argument.
"Miss You" hit harder than anything on the dance floor. "Beast of Burden" was Jagger and Richards at their most open. "Shattered" captured New York's late-70s chaos better than most of the punk records being made about it. The title track was so inflammatory — drawing complaints from Jesse Jackson and the NAACP over its lyrics — that there were public calls to pull the single. The Stones didn't pull it. Some Girls was also the first album they'd made since Mick Taylor quit in 1974, the first with Ronnie Wood fully in place, and it sounded like a band that had nothing to prove and everything to say.
