McKinley Morganfield was born in 1913 in Issaquena County, Mississippi, and raised in Clarksdale — the same Coahoma County town that produced Sam Cooke and Ike Turner, at the geographic center of Delta blues. He learned guitar from Son House directly. In 1941 and 1942, Alan Lomax recorded him for the Library of Congress in the field, documenting him before the world knew his name. Lomax told him he was good enough to make records. He believed it.
In 1943, he got on a train to Chicago with a guitar and almost nothing else. By 1944 he was playing electric guitar in the city's clubs. Chess Records — then called Aristocrat — signed him in 1948.
What happened next changed everything.
Muddy Waters plugged in, turned it up, and built a vocabulary for electric blues that hadn't existed before. "Rollin' Stone" in 1950. "Hoochie Coochie Man" in 1954. "Mannish Boy" in 1955. Many of his defining tracks were written by Willie Dixon, the Chess Records house songwriter and bassist who shaped a significant portion of the label's catalog alongside him. Together they handed the blueprint for rock and roll to every musician who came after.
The Rolling Stones named themselves after "Rollin' Stone." When they came to Chicago in 1964 to record at Chess Studios at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue, Muddy Waters was reportedly there — helping to move equipment. The most influential musician in rock, carrying boxes at the studio that bore his label's name, while the band named after his song recorded inside.
He didn't just influence rock and roll. He built the foundation it stands on.
