The VU meter — Volume Unit meter — was standardized in 1939 as a joint project between Bell Labs, CBS, and NBC, designed to give broadcasters a common language for audio levels. The specific requirement was a meter that showed how music sounded to a human ear, not just how loud the signal was technically. The engineers built in a 300-millisecond attack time deliberately. The needle doesn't chase every transient. It settles on average loudness. It tells you how the music feels.

Peak meters do the other job — they catch everything, every spike, every click. Mix engineers use both. But the VU meter is the one you watch. It's the one that moves with the music in a way that feels like the music is inside the machine.

The red zone is worth understanding. On a digital system, going into the red means distortion and data corruption. On analog tape — on an Ampex, a Studer, a 3M — a little bit of red was desirable. Tape saturation above 0 VU added warmth, compression, the quality that people describe when they say analog sounds better. Engineers pushed the needle into the red on purpose. The fear of the red is a digital-era habit imposed on an analog instrument that was designed to handle it differently.

The VU meter appears on Neve consoles and SSL boards and consumer hi-fi and four-track cassette recorders and every piece of audio equipment that wanted to communicate that something real was happening inside it. It became a design object — the visual shorthand for recorded music, for the room where music gets captured, for the moment between the performance and the record.
