In 1973, Procol Harum did something almost no rock band had ever done: they made a record that sounded like a grand hotel at the end of the world.
Grand Hotel was orchestral, cinematic, and completely uncompromising. While glam rock was dominating the charts and punk was gathering on the horizon, Procol Harum went the other direction — lush string arrangements, Gary Brooker's unmistakable piano, and lyrics that read like short stories. It was the kind of album that rewarded patience and punished distraction.
It didn't sell the way it deserved to. It never does with records this good.
