Pylon never cared about being famous. They cared about the sound — angular, propulsive, hypnotic post-punk that felt like nothing else coming out of America at the time. Vanessa Briscoe Hay out front, all energy and presence. The rhythm section locked into grooves that wouldn't quit. Gyrate (1980) and Chomp (1983) stand as two of the finest records the era produced, and most people have never heard them.
They broke up in 1983 at the peak of their powers. Reunited in 1989. Broke up again in 1991. Michael Stipe never stopped talking about them.
