"Atomic Heart Mother 1" Unisex T-Shirt (Pink Floyd)

Pink Floyd's First Number One. A Cow. And a 23-Minute Piece of Music Nobody Saw Coming.

Atomic Heart Mother was released in October 1970 and went straight to number one in the UK — Pink Floyd's first chart-topper. It came out the same month as the Isle of Wight Festival, at the exact moment the band was becoming one of the biggest live acts in the world. Nobody quite knew what to make of it.

The cover was designed by Hipgnosis — the design duo of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, who would go on to create some of the most iconic album art in rock history. The brief from the band was simple and deliberately absurd: no band name, no album title on the front, no clues whatsoever. Just a cow in a field. Hipgnosis drove to the English countryside and photographed the first cow they saw. That was it. The cow's name, reportedly, was Lulubelle III.

The title track runs 23 minutes and 44 seconds. It features a full orchestra, a choir, a cello soloist, and a brass ensemble — none of which Pink Floyd had ever used before. Roger Waters later called the album "a load of rubbish" and blocked its reissue on CD for years. David Gilmour disagreed. The argument was never fully resolved.

This alternative color treatment of the original Hipgnosis artwork is for fans who know the story behind the cow — and appreciate that sometimes the most radical artistic statement is a photograph of absolutely nothing unusual at all.
