The Small Faces were one of the biggest bands in Britain. Mod royalty, Immediate Records, a string of Top 10 singles. Marriott was 22 years old and done with it. He wanted to play louder, rawer, with less calculation. He called Peter Frampton — still 18, fresh off his run with The Herd — and added Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth and 17-year-old drummer Jerry Shirley.
What they made together was something the UK hadn't quite heard before: blues-rock with genuine soul in it, not performed soul, not borrowed soul — Marriott had one of the most powerful white voices in rock and he knew how to use it. "30 Days in the Hole." "I Don't Need No Doctor." "Natural Born Bugie." The songs were built to be played loud in large rooms, and they were.
Frampton left in 1971 to go solo. Humble Pie went harder, leaned further into the Fillmore East live sound, and kept recording until 1975. Marriott put the band back together in the '80s. He died in a house fire in 1991, aged 44. The cause was a lit cigarette.
Humble Pie never got their full due — overshadowed by the bands they influenced, remembered mostly as a footnote to Frampton's solo career. This tee is for the people who have the sequence right.
