"Light My Fire" Women's Ringer T-Shirt

"Light My Fire" began as a Robby Krieger composition — which surprised everyone who assumed Jim Morrison wrote everything. Krieger brought in the chord changes; Morrison added the lyrics; Ray Manzarek built the baroque organ intro that opens the song like a door swinging wide. The Doors recorded it for their debut album in 1967. At seven minutes and six seconds, it was untouchable on album. Then their manager convinced them to edit it down to under three minutes for radio. It went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for three weeks.

Then The Ed Sullivan Show called. The producers asked The Doors to change the lyric — "girl, we couldn't get much higher" — for broadcast. The band agreed. Then Morrison sang it anyway, live, on national television. Sullivan never had them back. The Doors didn't seem to mind.

The song has since been recorded by hundreds of artists — most famously José Feliciano, whose acoustic bossa nova version caused its own controversy when it was released during the 1968 World Series. A song that kept generating incidents. A song that still sounds like summer in Los Angeles and the end of something and the beginning of something else, simultaneously.
