Grand Hotel was orchestral, cinematic, and completely uncompromising. While glam rock was dominating the charts and punk was gathering on the horizon, Procol Harum went the other direction — lush string arrangements, Gary Brooker's unmistakable piano, and lyrics that read like short stories. It was the kind of album that rewarded patience and punished distraction.
This was the band that opened with "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in 1967 — one of the best-selling singles in UK chart history, a song that borrowed its structure from Bach and its mood from somewhere no one has quite been able to name since. Six years later, on Grand Hotel, they were still making records that nobody else could have made. Keith Reid's lyrics. Brooker's voice. Robin Trower long gone by then, but the band still finding new ways to be themselves.
It didn't sell the way it deserved to. It never does with records this good.
