The Voidoids were the band that made it real: Robert Quine's jagged, dissonant guitar against Hell's snarl, held together by the kind of rhythm section that didn't care if it was pretty.

"Blank Generation" came out in 1977, the same year the Pistols and The Clash dropped their debuts. Hell had been writing it since 1975. He was always ahead — he just didn't get the credit until everyone else caught up.
