The 8-track cartridge was developed by Bill Lear in 1964, in collaboration with Ampex, Ford, Motorola, and RCA Victor. Lear had made his money in aviation — the Learjet — and turned his attention to in-car audio because the existing solutions weren't good enough. Ford offered the 8-track player as a factory-installed option in 1966 Mustangs, Thunderbirds, and Lincolns. The format was in the dashboard before it was in the living room. That's where it was designed to live.

The "8-track" name refers to eight parallel tracks on quarter-inch tape arranged in four stereo program pairs. The tape ran in a continuous loop. You pushed the cartridge in, it played, and when it reached the end of one program it clicked to the next. This is where the format's most distinctive quality came from: because each of the four programs was a fixed length, albums were sometimes resequenced and songs were sometimes split mid-note between programs, silence or filler inserted to make the math work. The 8-track didn't just carry music — it occasionally rearranged it.

The format peaked between 1966 and 1978, outselling cassettes for the first six of those years. Cassettes eventually won because they were smaller, recordable, and didn't click in the middle of "Hotel California." But the stacks — the chunky plastic cartridges piled on the back seat or the shelf above the stereo — meant something specific. Physical music you could hold and move and sort and lose and find again.
