"Everything You Did" is track five on The Royal Scam, 1976. The narrator has just discovered his partner's infidelity. His response is not rage. He puts on a record. Loud. So the neighbors can hear. And the line he sings while this is happening: "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening."
That line is not a compliment. Steely Dan — Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, two jazz obsessives who had spent years as professional songwriters before anyone let them make records — held the Eagles in a specific kind of contempt. Not hatred. Contempt. The Eagles were everything Steely Dan wasn't: radio-friendly, earnest, uncomplicated. Putting on the Eagles while humiliating someone is the most Steely Dan move imaginable. It weaponizes soft rock.
The guitar solo on the track is Larry Carlton. The chord changes are not what you expect. The groove is tighter than it has any right to be. Fagen's vocal is cold and completely controlled. The whole song is a masterclass in using sophistication as a blade.
The Royal Scam was their fifth album. By this point they had stopped touring entirely and were a studio project — Fagen and Becker writing and producing, cycling through the best session musicians in Los Angeles. Carlton. Victor Feldman. The Brecker Brothers. They were building something that sounded like jazz but hit like rock and didn't apologize for either.
