"Vanilla Fudge" Premium Unisex T-Shirt

In 1967, They Took a Supremes Single and Turned It Into a Seven-Minute Hard Rock Epic. A Pop Song Slowed Down and Darkened Beyond Recognition — and It Charted Top Ten.

Vanilla Fudge formed on Long Island, New York in 1967 — not San Francisco, which matters. Their dense, heavy, organ-driven sound came out of the New York and New Jersey club circuit and had a harder edge than the psychedelia happening on the West Coast at the same time. They were signed to Atco Records (an Atlantic subsidiary) after being discovered playing in New York clubs, and their self-titled debut album arrived the same year they formed.

The entire debut was covers — none of them recognizable in their original forms. Holland-Dozier-Holland's "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (written for the Supremes in 1966) became a seven-minute dirge that hit #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Vanilla Fudge in 1968, nearly two years after the original. The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride" and "Eleanor Rigby," the Zombies' "She's Not There," the Impressions' "People Get Ready" — all transformed beyond their source material into something slower, heavier, and dramatically rearranged. The concept was the band's entire identity: take the familiar and make it strange.

Carmine Appice's approach to the drum kit — thunderous, spaced-out, treating drums as a lead instrument rather than keeping time in the background — made a direct impression on John Bonham. When Led Zeppelin came to New York on their first American tour in late 1968, Bonham and Plant specifically went to see Vanilla Fudge play. The lineage from Appice to Bonham is among the most documented drummer-to-drummer influences in rock history. Appice later formed Cactus with Tim Bogert, then Beck, Bogert & Appice with Jeff Beck from 1972 to 1974 — one of the more interesting post-band trajectories of the era.

Mark Stein's organ, Tim Bogert's bass, and Vince Martell's guitar completed the arrangement. The band dissolved in 1970, reformed multiple times, and never quite replicated what the debut had done. The debut is the document.
