In 1973, Paul Rodgers walked away from Free — one of the great British rock bands of the era, at the peak of their powers — because he had a clearer idea of what he wanted to do next. What came next was Bad Company.

Rodgers called Mick Ralphs, who was playing guitar in Mott the Hoople. He called Simon Kirke, his drummer from Free. They added Boz Burrell on bass — a former King Crimson member who Robert Fripp had personally taught to play bass because he wanted Burrell's voice in the band. Four musicians from four of the most important bands in British rock, forming one new one.

Peter Grant — Led Zeppelin's manager — signed them immediately to Swan Song Records, Zeppelin's own label. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1974 and went straight to number one on both sides of the Atlantic. "Can't Get Enough" was the lead single. "Shooting Star," "Ready for Love," "Movin' On" — the album didn't have a weak track. Bad Company didn't build an audience. They arrived with one.

What made them different from the other hard rock acts of the era was discipline. Rodgers' voice — raw, warm, and completely controlled — gave them a bluesy authority that most bands in their lane couldn't match. Ralphs' riffs were big but never cluttered. The songs breathed. "Feel Like Makin' Love" went to number one in 1975. "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" in 1979. Bad Company understood that less was more, and that a great song didn't need to be a long one.

After 30+ years designing apparel for major retailers, we know that Bad Company fans wear the name with swagger. This tee is for people who know exactly where that sound came from — and why it's never gone away.

Why Bad Company

Free. Mott the Hoople. King Crimson. Swan Song Records. A debut album that went to #1 on both sides of the Atlantic. Bad Company didn't stumble into greatness — they assembled it deliberately, and then played it like they'd been doing it their whole lives. Because in a way, they had.
