1978. After the massive commercial pressure of Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen came back with something harder, leaner, and more honest. Darkness on the Edge of Town opened with "Badlands" — and it hit like a fist.

The album existed because of a lawsuit. Springsteen had sued his manager Mike Appel during the Born to Run period, which put him under a legal injunction that kept him out of the studio for nearly two years, from 1976 into 1977. He couldn't record new material. During that stretch he wrote obsessively — somewhere in the range of 70 songs, eventually culled down to the ten that became Darkness. When the legal situation resolved and he finally got back in with Jon Landau producing, the album that came out was a deliberate rejection of the anthemic optimism of Born to Run. Darker themes, stripped-back arrangements, characters who don't escape — they endure.

"Badlands" is the exception within that framework: the one song on the record that does feel like a genuine rallying cry. Which is exactly why it opens the album — it earns the darkness that follows. Roy Bittan's piano intro is one of the most immediately recognizable openings in American rock. The E Street Band at that moment: Bittan, Max Weinberg, Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Miami Steve Van Zandt.

"Lights out tonight, trouble in the heartland." Four words. Everything Springsteen was about.
