They had been together since 1969 — Hereford, England, managed by Guy Stevens, named after a Willard Manus novel Stevens found in a secondhand shop. Four albums on Island Records, a cult following, and not enough money to keep going. They called it. They were done.
Bowie heard they were breaking up and offered them a song he'd written. They said yes. "All the Young Dudes" went to number three in the UK in the summer of 1972. The band that was finished became one of the defining acts of the glam era.
What made Mott different from the other glam bands was Ian Hunter. He wrote about rock and roll from the inside — the tour bus, the disillusionment, the gap between the fantasy and the reality — with a directness that nobody else in the genre was doing. "All the Way from Memphis." "The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll." "Saturday Gigs." Songs about being in a band that weren't romantic about it.
The Clash cited them. Morrissey was obsessed. When the band finally split in 1974, Hunter took Mick Ronson — who had just left Bowie's backing band — and went solo. The lineage runs straight through to punk and beyond.
