1968. Yoko Ono was in the studio for the first time. George Harrison quit and came back. Ringo quit and came back. John and Paul were barely speaking directly to each other. The band was recording a double album in a state of barely managed collapse, and somewhere in the middle of it Paul McCartney kept insisting on recording a ska-influenced song about a couple named Desmond and Molly over and over until everyone was satisfied.

They were not satisfied for some time. Multiple versions across multiple sessions in June and July. The phrase "ob-la-di, ob-la-da" came from Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, a Nigerian musician who used it as a personal catchphrase — a statement about resilience, life continuing regardless. Scott later sued McCartney over it. McCartney settled out of court.

One late session, after everyone had been in the studio for hours, John Lennon walked in — by several accounts in a state of some agitation — sat down at the piano, and played the song's introduction at double tempo with a harder attack than anyone had used before, and said something to the effect that this was how it should sound. That piano intro — the one on the record, the one everyone knows — is Lennon's. He played it as a provocation. It stayed because it was right.

Lennon is also reported to have called the song "granny music." He is also the reason it sounds the way it does. In the final verse, Desmond and Molly's roles are quietly reversed — Desmond stays home with the children while Molly sings in the band. McCartney has never been entirely clear on whether it was intentional. It stayed.

Life goes on. The band that made this record was gone within two years. The song has been covered more than three thousand times.
