Veronica Bennett Was 17 When She Sang the Drum Intro of "Be My Baby" Into Existence.

She grew up in Spanish Harlem, formed the Ronettes with her sister Estelle and their cousin Nedra Talley around 1959, and by 1963 was standing in Gold Star Studios in Hollywood recording with Phil Spector. The drum intro to "Be My Baby" — boom, boom, boom-crack — is one of the most recognizable four beats in pop history. Brian Wilson heard the record and said it was the greatest ever made. It was the direct inspiration for Pet Sounds.

The Wall of Sound was Phil Spector's production method: stacked orchestration, multiple musicians playing identical parts, cavernous echo, recorded in mono so it hit you as a single overwhelming mass of noise. The Ronettes were the instrument that Wall of Sound was built for. Ronnie's voice — with its natural vibrato, its emotional directness, the way it sat above the production without being swallowed by it — was the thing that made it work.

She married Spector in 1968. By her own account, documented in her 1990 memoir Be My Baby, he kept her effectively captive — her shoes taken away so she couldn't leave the house, a gold coffin displayed in the living room that he said was for her if she ever tried to go. She escaped in 1972, barefoot. She rebuilt. She worked with Bruce Springsteen. She sang on Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" in 1986. She performed until near the end of her life. She died January 12, 2022, still magnificent.

Phil Spector was convicted of second-degree murder in 2009 and died in prison in 2021. Ronnie outlived him by a year.
