"Pretty Vacant" Sounds Like Chaos. It Was Actually Constructed Very Carefully.

Malcolm McLaren had been to New York. He'd seen Richard Hell at CBGB — the torn clothes, "Please Kill Me" written on a shirt, the whole blank generation aesthetic. He brought it back to London and handed it to four kids from West London and a boutique on the King's Road. The band that came out of that was partly genuine and partly a situationist art project that McLaren had been planning for years.

"Pretty Vacant" was released July 1, 1977 on Virgin Records. It went to number six in the UK. The riff came from Steve Jones. The concept — the vacancy, the title — came from Glen Matlock, who had been reading about Richard Hell and the CBGB scene and understood that what McLaren had seen in New York was a posture that could be weaponized. Matlock wrote most of the music on Never Mind the Bollocks. He had been fired from the band in February 1977, ten months before the album came out, replaced by Sid Vicious, who could barely play bass. The bass on the record is largely Steve Jones overdubbing the parts.

John Lydon has said the song isn't nihilism. It's refusal. The vacancy is chosen — a deliberate rejection of what mainstream culture wants you to want. "We're so pretty, oh so pretty — vacant" as a statement of intent rather than a shrug.

The Sex Pistols formed in 1975 and imploded on January 14, 1978, when Lydon walked offstage at Winterland in San Francisco and said into the microphone: "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" The entire story — the single, the album, the Bill Grundy interview, the Queen's Silver Jubilee, all of it — happened inside two and a half years.
