Marc Bolan Invented Glam Rock, and Nobody Has Fully Explained How He Did It.

He started as Mark Feld, a mod kid from East London obsessed with clothes and his own mythology. By the late 1960s he was Tyrannosaurus Rex — acoustic guitar, bongos, whispery psychedelic folk played in small rooms for serious people. Nobody expected what came next.

1970. Bolan plugged in. Added a drummer. Put glitter under his eyes. "Ride a White Swan" went to number two in the UK. "Hot Love" went to number one and stayed there for six weeks. Then "Get It On." Then "Telegram Sam." Then "Metal Guru." Five UK number ones in eighteen months. He was the biggest thing in Britain and he was doing it with three chords and a wink and a voice that sounded like nothing else on earth.

David Bowie was watching. So was Morrissey. So was every kid who felt like rock and roll had gotten too serious and needed someone to remind it that it was supposed to be fun.

Bolan died on September 16, 1977. He was a passenger in a Mini driven by his partner Gloria Jones — the same Gloria Jones who co-wrote "Tainted Love" — when it hit a fence post near Barnes, London. He was 29 years old. Two weeks from turning 30.
