"Take It Easy - The Eagles" Women's Racerback Cropped Tank

Jackson Browne Started It. Glenn Frey Finished It. A Small Town in Arizona Built a Statue Around It.

Jackson Browne had written most of "Take It Easy" but was stuck on the second verse. At the time, he and Glenn Frey were living in the same Laurel Canyon apartment complex in Los Angeles — the center of the early '70s California music scene. Frey heard Browne working on the song through the walls, they talked, and Frey completed the lyric. The "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona" line was Browne's — he'd actually been stranded there with a broken-down car. Frey brought the verse home.

The song became the Eagles' debut single in 1972, reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and established the template for everything the band would do for the next decade: smooth harmonies, a country-tinged groove, and a lyric that made relaxed cool feel like a philosophy rather than a pose. The band at that moment was Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner — a different configuration than the one most people picture. Producer Glyn Johns, who had worked with the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and the Who, shaped the debut album sound.

Winslow, Arizona eventually installed a life-size bronze statue of a man with a guitar on the corner the song references, officially designating the site a tourist attraction. A song about passing through saved a Route 66 town that had been struggling since the interstate bypassed it. That's what a great lyric can do.
