The Cavern Club opened on January 16, 1957 as a jazz venue. By the early 1960s it had become the center of something the music press would eventually call Merseybeat — a specific Liverpool sound, a specific Liverpool moment, bands playing American rock and roll and rhythm and blues back to audiences who had never heard it live before.
The Beatles played the Cavern 292 times between 1961 and 1963. The room held maybe 600 people. It was below street level, three vaulted brick arches, and when it was packed the condensation dripped from the ceiling and the heat was significant. Brian Epstein came down the stairs on November 9, 1961, to see what people were talking about. He signed them within weeks. Within two years they were the most famous band on earth.
The original Cavern was demolished in 1973 to make way for a ventilation shaft for a rail tunnel. What stands on Mathew Street now is a faithful reconstruction, opened in 1984. The people who go there know this. They go anyway, because the address is still the address and the story happened where it happened.
The Searchers played here. Gerry and the Pacemakers. Cilla Black. But it was the Beatles who made it mythic, and it was those 292 shows in a damp basement on a side street in Liverpool that made the Beatles.
