Before Frampton Comes Alive, There Was The Herd.

In 1966, Peter Frampton was 16 years old and already the guitarist in one of London's most talked-about bands. The Herd were part of the same scene as The Who and the Small Faces — managed by the same team, playing the same circuit — and for a brief, brilliant moment, they were everywhere.

"From the Underworld" hit the UK Top 10 in 1967. The title was a deliberate reference to the Orpheus myth — a pop song with a classical subtext, which was exactly the kind of move that defined the smarter end of the British psych-pop moment. "I Don't Want Our Loving to Die" followed it into the charts. The music press called Frampton "the Face of '68." He was 18.

The Herd broke up in 1969. Frampton moved on to Humble Pie, then to a solo career, then to Frampton Comes Alive! — still one of the best-selling live albums in history. But The Herd is where it started: a teenager in Swinging London, playing guitar in a band that knew exactly what it was doing and burned out before most people noticed.
