"The Quarrymen" Unisex T-Shirt

July 6, 1957. St. Peter's Church Fete, Woolton, Liverpool. John Lennon Was 16.

The Quarrymen were playing on a makeshift stage in the churchyard — skiffle music, Gene Vincent covers, a lineup that changed constantly. After the set, Ivan Vaughan introduced Lennon to a 15-year-old from Allerton named Paul McCartney. McCartney picked up a guitar and played Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock" from memory, all the words, note perfect. Lennon listened. A few weeks later he asked McCartney to join the band.

The calculation Lennon made that afternoon — McCartney was good enough to be a threat, which meant he was good enough to be useful — is one of the more consequential decisions in the history of popular music.

McCartney brought in George Harrison in early 1958. Harrison was 14, younger than the others, and Lennon was skeptical. George auditioned by playing "Raunchy" on the upper deck of a Liverpool bus until Lennon said yes. John's art school friend Stuart Sutcliffe joined on bass. It was Sutcliffe who pushed for the name change — from the Quarrymen to something that nodded to Buddy Holly's Crickets. They became the Beatles. Sutcliffe died in Hamburg in April 1962, before any of it happened.

Hamburg is where the Quarrymen became the Beatles in practice if not yet in name. Eight-hour sets at the Indra and Kaiserkeller clubs. Night after night until they were tight enough and loud enough and confident enough to do what came next.
