The working-class punk icon grew up in diplomatic postings and British boarding schools. He knew what he was doing when he renamed himself and moved into a squat and formed the 101ers. He saw the Sex Pistols play in April 1976 and within weeks had quit the 101ers to join the group that became The Clash. The contradiction between his background and his chosen identity was one he lived with openly and never fully resolved, which is part of why his words carry weight — he wasn't performing rebellion from a position of nothing to lose. He had something to walk away from and walked away from it.

The Clash made five studio albums between 1977 and 1982. London Calling. Sandinista!. Combat Rock. Strummer pushed the band toward reggae, dub, funk, and Afrobeat long before any of that was fashionable in British rock, because he was genuinely curious about where music came from and what it could do. When the band fell apart in 1983 and 1985, he spent years finding his way back.

He found it with the Mescaleros in the late 1990s. Global a Go-Go in 2001 is one of the finest albums of his career — loose, generous, alive with the same restless curiosity that made Sandinista! possible. He died on December 22, 2002, from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. He was 50. Streetcore, the album he had just finished recording, was released posthumously in 2003.
