In late 1976, the Sex Pistols released "Anarchy in the U.K." It was their first single. NME gave it a rave. Melody Maker didn't know what to do with it. And somewhere across the British music press, a version of the same question kept surfacing: Is this the future of rock 'n' roll?
The question wasn't rhetorical. Rock in 1976 was genuinely in trouble — bloated stadium tours, concept albums that ran 40 minutes before the first hook, a growing distance between the bands and any audience that hadn't already bought three of their records. Punk arrived as a refusal. Three chords. Two minutes. No solos. No deference.
Then came the Bill Grundy interview. December 1st, 1976. The Sex Pistols appeared on ITV's Today programme, a teatime magazine show, and within four minutes had said words on live British television that had never been said before. Grundy provoked them. They obliged. The Daily Mirror ran the headline "THE FILTH AND THE FURY" the next morning. The band was banned from venues across the country. EMI dropped them. A&M dropped them. Virgin signed them.
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols was released in October 1977. The title was challenged in court on obscenity grounds. The defense called a professor of linguistics who argued, successfully, that "bollocks" was a legitimate Old English term. The album went to number one.
The question got its answer. It just took a few court cases and a few dropped record deals to get there.
