August 26–30, 1970. The Isle of Wight — a small island off the south coast of England, population 100,000 — received somewhere between 600,000 and 700,000 people over five days. It was, at that moment, the largest gathering of human beings in British history.
The lineup was staggering: Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Chicago, Ten Years After, Donovan, Procol Harum, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Sly & the Family Stone, Leonard Cohen performing at midnight. The festival ran for so long and so chaotically that some acts played at 3am to audiences too exhausted and too committed to leave.
Hendrix closed the festival. It was his final UK performance. Three weeks later, he was dead. Nobody in the crowd knew they were watching him for the last time.
The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival is remembered as the moment the counterculture reached its absolute peak — and began to fracture under its own weight. Woodstock had been the dream. Isle of Wight was the reality: massive, chaotic, extraordinary, and unrepeatable.
