In late 1974, Mick Fleetwood needed a guitarist. He auditioned Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham said he'd join, but only if his girlfriend came too. Fleetwood said yes. Stevie Nicks had been working as a waitress to pay the bills while the two of them wrote songs together in Los Angeles. She came in as part of a package deal, and within a year Fleetwood Mac had a self-titled album that went to #1.

Then came Rumours. Recorded in 1976, it was made under conditions that should have made it impossible: Nicks and Buckingham were breaking up. John and Christine McVie were divorcing. Mick Fleetwood's marriage was collapsing. Everyone in the band was losing someone while they were in the studio together. They recorded it anyway. Rumours sold 40 million copies and remains one of the best-selling albums in history.

Nicks wrote "Dreams" sitting cross-legged on Mick Fleetwood's bed in the Record Plant's houseboat studio in Sausalito, in about ten minutes, wearing headphones. It's the only Fleetwood Mac song to ever reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2020, 43 years after its release, it did it again — after a video of a man skateboarding to work while drinking cranberry juice went viral on TikTok. The song found a new generation entirely on its own.

Her solo debut, Bella Donna (1981), went to #1. "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back," "Talk to Me" — she built a parallel career while remaining in Fleetwood Mac, something almost no one in rock history has managed at that scale. In 1998 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Fleetwood Mac. In 2019 she was inducted again as a solo artist — the first woman ever to receive that honor twice.
