August 1969. The sessions for Abbey Road were wrapping up. The band had been falling apart for two years — lawsuits, arguments over management, John barely speaking to Paul. They came back to Abbey Road anyway. They finished the album. And at the end of Side Two, after all of it, Paul McCartney wrote two lines: "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

"The End" is two minutes and five seconds long. It opens with the only drum solo Ringo Starr ever recorded with The Beatles. Then John, Paul, and George trade two-bar guitar solos in rotation — the only time all three played lead guitar together on a Beatles recording. Then the strings come in. Then those two lines. Then silence.

Three months after the album came out, John Lennon told the other three he was leaving. The band announced the split publicly in April 1970. They never recorded together again.

The people who know this song know that McCartney put the thesis statement of the entire Beatles catalog into the final seconds of the final track. It wasn't accidental. This tee is for those people.
