Don and Phil Everly grew up in Brownie, Kentucky, sons of Ike Everly — a guitarist who ran in the same circles as Merle Travis and who had his boys performing on the radio before they were teenagers. This was not a stylistic influence. It was apprenticeship. They came out of a family that lived inside country music, and they brought that into rock and roll when the two forms were just beginning to collide.

"Bye Bye Love" came out in 1957 and went to #2. "Wake Up Little Susie" followed, banned in Boston for its suggestive premise (two teenagers who fell asleep at the drive-in and have to explain themselves in the morning). "All I Have to Do Is Dream" hit #1 in 1958 and stayed there for seven weeks. "Cathy's Clown," which they wrote themselves, was the best-selling single of 1960. Their voices locked together in a way that nobody had quite heard before — a high lonesome country harmony fused to rock rhythm, specific enough to be theirs and universal enough to be endlessly borrowed.

The career ended brutally. In 1973, at a show at Knott's Berry Farm in California, Phil smashed his guitar on stage and walked off. Don finished the show alone and told the audience the Everly Brothers were finished. They didn't speak for ten years. The reconciliation happened in 1983, at the Royal Albert Hall in London — two sold-out nights, both brothers on the same stage for the first time in a decade. They recorded EB 84 the following year. Don died in 2021. Phil had died in 2014.
