1968. The Beatles were fracturing. The Maharishi experiment was over. The sessions for the White Album were tense, sprawling, and sometimes brilliant — recorded largely with the four Beatles working in separate studios simultaneously, George Martin has described it as producing four solo albums under one roof. "Yer Blues" was different: cut in a tiny annexe off Studio Two at Abbey Road, just the four of them, deliberately cramped, to capture something that felt live and raw.

Lennon wrote it as both a tribute to British blues and a parody of it — but the pain in his voice was completely real. "Yes I'm lonely, wanna die." It wasn't a pose. It was Lennon at his most unguarded, stripping away the pop craft and letting something darker through.

Months later, in December 1968, Lennon assembled one of the most unlikely lineups in rock history for the Rolling Stones' own television special, the Rock and Roll Circus. The group he put together — called the Dirty Mac — was Lennon on guitar, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards on bass (not his instrument), and Mitch Mitchell on drums (borrowed from the Jimi Hendrix Experience). They performed "Yer Blues" live. The footage was suppressed by the Stones — reportedly because their own performance was underwhelming by comparison — and wasn't officially released until 1996. For nearly 30 years it existed only in bootleg form.
