The Guess Who came out of Winnipeg, Manitoba — which is about as far from the center of the rock and roll universe as you can get — and proceeded to score one of the most defiant #1 hits in American chart history. "American Woman," released in 1970, told the United States exactly what a Canadian rock band thought of its wars, its materialism, and its city lights. It went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. America bought it by the millions.
Before that: "These Eyes" (1969), their breakthrough, a slow-burning ballad that announced Burton Cummings as one of the great voices of his generation. "No Time." "Laughing." "Undun." "Share the Land." The Guess Who had a run from 1969 to 1971 that put them alongside anyone. They were the first Canadian rock band to have a #1 hit in the United States, and they did it on their own terms.
Randy Bachman left in 1970, went on to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and took "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" with him. Burton Cummings kept the band going and the hits coming. Two of the most talented people in Canadian rock history, briefly pointed in the same direction, making something that neither could have made alone.
