In December 1975, Joe Walsh got the call from Glenn Frey and Don Henley. Bernie Leadon had quit the Eagles — creatively burned out, tired of the direction toward country rock, legend has it he handed Henley a beer and walked out mid-recording session. Walsh came in from outside: he'd already built a reputation with the James Gang and his solo work, and he brought a harder, more electric edge that pushed the band toward what would become Hotel California.

But before all that, in 1975, Walsh was just Walsh — one of the funniest, most self-aware people in rock. While everyone else was taking themselves very seriously, he showed up wearing this shirt. "Have A Shitty Day" is a perfect inversion of the forced positivity that was already becoming its own cultural cliché. It's the anti-bumper sticker. It's the guitarist who later wrote "Life's Been Good" — a song about being rich and famous and mildly dissatisfied about it — telling the world exactly where he stands on optimism.

Walsh ran for president in 1980 on a platform of making "Life's Been Good" the national anthem. He did not win. He has never seemed particularly bothered by this.

The shirt is a document. It says: I am in on the joke. The joke is everything.
