By 1973, Paul McCartney had something to prove. The Beatles had been over for three years. The critics were brutal. Ram had been called self-indulgent. Wild Life was considered a throwaway. Wings was still trying to establish itself as something real.
Red Rose Speedway was McCartney's answer. A double album was originally planned — a sprawling, experimental record that would have been among the most ambitious of his post-Beatles career. The label said no. It was cut down to a single LP and released in May 1973. The critics panned it. "My Love" went to #1 in the United States and stayed there for four weeks.
The full unedited version, finally released in 2018 as part of the Archive Collection, reveals what the original double album would have sounded like. It is a significantly better and stranger record than what came out in 1973. The people who've heard it know.
