By the early '70s, Willie Nelson had been writing hits for other people for a decade — "Crazy" for Patsy Cline, "Hello Walls" for Faron Young, "Funny How Time Slips Away" for Billy Walker. Nashville knew he could write. What Nashville couldn't figure out was what to do with him as an artist.
So he left. He moved to Austin, where the hippies and the cowboys were drinking in the same bars, and signed with Atlantic Records — becoming their first country artist. What came out of those sessions was Shotgun Willie: raw, loose, unpolished in the best possible way. Not Nashville. Not pop country. Something that didn't have a name yet.
The Armadillo World Headquarters became his church. The outlaw country movement — Waylon, Kris, Billy Joe Shaver — crystallized around that moment. Willie didn't start it alone, but Shotgun Willie was the album that proved it was possible to walk away from the machine and come out the other side sounding more like yourself than ever.
