New York City, 1983. Jonathan Demme set up cameras at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood and filmed the greatest concert movie ever made. Among everything that happened that night, one moment stands apart: David Byrne, alone on stage with a floor lamp, dancing with it like it's his partner, singing a love song so simple and unguarded it barely sounds like the same band.
"This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" was unlike anything else in the Talking Heads catalog. The subtitle said it all — it was built on a deliberately simple chord progression, stripped of the angular art-rock and nervous energy that defined the rest of Speaking in Tongues. Where the Talking Heads were usually cerebral and strange, this song was warm. Tina Weymouth's bass. Chris Frantz's drums. Jerry Harrison's keyboards. And Byrne, for once, just letting it be a love song.
He wrote it about finding home — not a place, but a feeling. The feeling of being exactly where you're supposed to be.
Stop Making Sense was inducted into the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2021. The lamp is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
