By 1978, John Lennon had been out of the music business for three years. He was living in the Dakota in New York and a rented house in Tokyo, raising Sean, baking bread, and deliberately not being John Lennon the rock star. There's a photograph from that period — Lennon, Yoko, and young Sean in Tokyo — and in it, Lennon is wearing a "Working Class Hero" shirt. Not a Beatles shirt. Not an Imagine shirt. This one.
The choice matters. "Working Class Hero" was released on John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band in 1970 — the rawest, least polished, most deliberately unBeatlesque thing Lennon had ever made. The production was spare: an acoustic guitar, Lennon's voice, almost nothing else. The lyrics were an indictment. They hurt you at home and they hit you at school / They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool. A direct line from his Liverpool childhood through the entire structure of class and ambition and the way systems keep people contained. The BBC banned it for profanity. It became one of the most covered songs in rock history anyway.
Lennon was 30 when he recorded it. He was wearing the shirt at 37, during the quietest years of his life, with two years left to live. The politics hadn't gone anywhere. The anger hadn't either. He'd just gotten better at carrying it.
