The story of Rockpile is a story about record contracts and loyalty. Dave Edmunds was signed to Swansong. Nick Lowe was signed to Stiff. Their labels wouldn’t allow them to record together officially — so instead, they toured constantly as Rockpile, with Terry Williams on drums and Billy Bremner on second guitar, while simultaneously playing on each other’s solo records. Every classic track from Edmunds’ Repeat When Necessary and Lowe’s Labour of Lust? That’s Rockpile, uncredited. The pub rock scene’s tightest band, hiding in plain sight.

When they finally got to make Seconds of Pleasure in 1980, the result was everything you’d expect from a band that had been playing together for years and waiting just as long to put their name on something. Raw, joyful, precise — rock and roll that sounded like it was invented the week before and perfected the week after. "Teacher Teacher." "Wrong Again (Let’s Face It)." "Now and Always." Fourteen songs that proved the wait was worth it.

They broke up the following year. Of course they did. Rockpile were too good, too specific, too much of a particular moment. But those records — the solo ones and the one together — have never sounded dated. They never will.
